What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a nerve disorder caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve runs down the lower back, the buttocks, and the legs. If this nerve becomes constricted in any of the channels through which it must pass, it can cause pain. Constriction can be caused by many things, including inflammation and injury. The following are the top five symptoms associated with sciatica:

Difficulty Sitting for Long Periods

You may start to notice it is increasingly difficult to sit for long periods of time with sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerve can become even more constricted when sitting, which will increase pain and discomfort.

Lower Back Pain

One of the first symptoms of sciatica is low back pain. The pain can be dull or sharp and will usually run down the back and into the buttocks.

Leg Pain

Leg pain can also be associated with sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs down the legs. Leg pain from sciatica can sometimes be so severe it hurts to walk.

Numbness

If your sciatic nerve is compressed, you may also experience numbness. This numbness can be in your lower body and back.

Tingling

Tingling is another common symptom of sciatica. This tingling can be felt in your buttocks, legs, feet, or lower back.

How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Our chiropractor can perform a spinal adjustment to help relieve sciatic nerve compression. When the spine is out of proper alignment, it can cause inflammation that constricts nerves throughout the body.
